4. Wombarra Cable Car:
A representative from NIRACC (Northern Illawarra Residents Against Cable Car) spoke about their recent meetings and activities. She thanked the community for the support shown to try to stop this proposed development.
The group NIRACC was formed after the announcement in the Illawarra Mercury on the 8th May of a proposed development of a cable car in Wombarra. The first meeting of the group was held on16th of May with over 80 local residents attending to voice their opposition to this proposal.
Following this first meeting, the NIRACC email/mail list has grown to approximately 100 and a Facebook page opposing the development of a cable car on the North Illawarra escarpment has grown to over 400 members.
Another protest meeting was held on 28th May at the front gates of the proposed development with approximately 60 people attending.
Opposition to the proposal includes issues surrounding
1) Environmental destruction
2) Inappropriate development for this environmentally delicate site
3) Unacceptable impact on the local residents
4) Unacceptable impact on local infrastructure including roads, traffic volume on LHD and other local roads
5) Inadequate infrastructure to support any proposal of this type in the area
6) Unacceptable visual pollution
7) Proposal not in keeping with Local Environment Plan
The group is now:
1) Encouraging more members to either join the email group by contacting NIRAAC on niracc@gmail.com or joining the Facebook group (North Illawarra Against Cable Car)
2) Writing to the local member, relevant ministers, politicians and council.
3) Preparing to continue our opposition to this proposal
4) Awaiting a DA to be lodged with Wollongong Council
5. Significant Tree Register and Street Tree list:
Danie provided background to the Significant Tree Register No. 1 submitted by NC2 in May 2005 following the surprise removal of mature Paperbark trees in Cater St. She asked the meeting if they were interested in updating and resubmitting the Register to WCC Planning and Environment as well as North Parks and the Heritage Advisory Co. The meeting supported this proposal so Danie will begin the process of calling for tree nominations soon. NC2 also submitted a Suggested Street Tree Planting List for Nth Illawarra in August 2005. The meeting supported the resubmission of this document to the appropriate council departments. Danie will email copies of these lists to anyone interested.
6. Outstanding items:
6.1 Asthma Weed - Danie has just completed a third report on Asthma Weed sightings in the Illawarra. These 3 reports cover 15 months. This will be her last unless WCC and the Noxious Weed Authority ask her to continue. She will continue to check the local area.
6.2 Friends of Scarborough Wombarra Cemetery - Danie provided background. An onsite meeting with Cemetery managers, a WCC Landscaped Planner and interested residents has been arranged for 22 June. It is hoped that a Friends group will be started and our concerns about the management and future planning of the Cemetery will be discussed.
6.3 Asbestos in Headlands Ave carpark - Dave reported that work had commenced on the buried asbestos.
7. General business:
7.1 Condition of footpath north of entrance to Coledale Beach Reserve
